Actress Shannon Day in my studio
I was grateful to photograph actress Shannon Day in my studio yesterday. Lots more edits to show you as I play catch-up on some earlier shoots, but this one struck me right away so I wanted to share…
Lighting is again very simple. The light was still setup from my shoot with Claudia, so what we had was a Nikon SB-900 with a 1/4 CTO Honl Photo Filter (to warm up the subject a bit), all inside the new Photoflex XS Octodome NXT. I did move Shannon a little closer to the background on this one as it was later in the day and I didn’t have much available light to help out on the grey seamless (she’s only about a foot from the paper, which ends up as a nice, almost chocolaty color due to the ambient combined with the slight spill from the warmed-up speedlight) . All this small flash lighting is so easy to move around at the last second that it really doesn’t interrupt a shoot at all.

The light is really lush and beautiful. But what makes the photo is her composure. And this is all the photographer not the light. Question, do you think this light is only useful for tight portraits?
Hi Jimmy- thanks! Since I primarily shoot single portraits, the OctoDome works great. I just simply haven’t had the chance to shoot groups, but I would certainly think it will work great with 1-3 subjects in the frame, of course based on my shooting style. When I test it, I’ll post it, so keep in touch…
Thanks David. This OctoDome will be a nice addition to the 1/4 Speedgrid I use to focus the light when I need a dramatic effect.
cheers
