Sunday’s lighting theme: music and food

Sunday’s lighting theme: music and food

We wrapped up our free March lighting workshop in the studio on Sunday and once again got to hang out with fellow photographers and share some knowledge.  USA Today technology reporter Jefferson Graham showed up  and being a guitar buff like myself, Jeff fit in perfectly for my three-light portrait setup. For the main light, [...]

January’s lighting workshop a big hit, next stop February

January’s lighting workshop a big hit, next stop February

Our free January workshop in my L.A. studio was a blast- we did 4 lighting setups, ranging from a one light snoot/reflector shot to a 4 light setup with grids, gobos, softbox, and a reflector.  It was great meeting with fellow photographers, taking questions and just plain having fun. One of my New Year’s resolutions

One of my New Year’s resolutions

In an effort to start off my New Year’s resolution of practicing more lighting, I called model Tanje Solhem into the studio for some test shots. Pretty simple lighting using just 2 Nikon SB-900s, a prototype of my new diffuser as a mainlight, along with a 1/8 Speed Grid on the background.

Please do ask any technical questions through comments and I’ll share them with all. Enjoy! Gear used in this shoot: Nikon [...]

And a big thank you goes to…

And a big thank you goes to…

… the Honl family! Now that I’ve officially returned to photography full-time this week (even in this economic climate, when it’s tougher than ever to be a photographer), I really need to thank my biggest supporters (equal to Claudia) for taking the HonlPhoto reigns for me, my Dad Charles, and my brother Ryan. My Dad [...]
